I love Guy Ritchie's gangster flicks, particularly Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and RocknRolla. They are violent, nasty and have that brilliant sense of humour that the British are renowned for. The Gentlemen is a return to that crime/black comedy that Ritchie is known for, although I probably wouldn't class this as much as a black comedy like his previous films, but it is definitely a cool, suave gangster flick. The cast couldn't have been more perfect, Matthew McConaughey is brilliant as the lead, and the other actors, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell and Michelle Rockery (yes from Downton Abbey) are all superb and entertaining in their roles. I have had a lot of fun with this film and have seen it twice already. Definitely a recommendation if this is your sort of picture.

The ensemble cast is a delight and my only complain is that Henry Golding should have had more screen time. There all the perfect ingredients we expect in a comedy crime thriller filled with witty dialogues and twists.
Matthew McConaughey finally gets his much need break since Interstellar and he is very convincing as an American expat in London. The screenplay obviously has been influenced by Tarantino's films like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction but nevertheless it works. This is the most fun I have ever had in a cinema since Game Night.

Aka one of the most overrated anime that debuted in 2016. Every time it came out with a brand new episode. It was always makes it to the top trending pages of Twitter because everybody couldn't get enough of how "good" this show was. For me I thought it was ok and I thought the hype was mediocre. Well let's just hope that this review will be a lot more enjoyable than YOI and less stressful than last weeks anime. Here is my review of Loveless. "In his first day at his new school, a then twelve-year-old Ritsuka Aoyagi meets a mysterious twenty-year-old male named Soubi Agatsuma. Soubi claims to be a good friend of Ritsuka's brother, Seimei, who was murdered 2 years earlier. Upon the inspection of Seimei's abandoned computer files, Ritsuka discovers that an organization called 'Septimal Moon' (Nana no tsuki 七の月) was responsible for Seimei's death. As Ritsuka quickly discovers, Seimei and Soubi acted as a pair involved in spell battles invoked by carefully selected words. Now Soubi is Ritsuka's 'sentouki', or Fighter Unit, and Ritsuka is his 'Sacrifice'. Together, they challenge Septimal Moon to find out the truth behind Seimei's murder and the reason for Ritsuka's amnesia, and form an intimate bond as they unravel the mystery. " (info by wiki) You know before this years romance month or when I started my research on 2nd Gig. I thought that the 3 anime's I was going to watch was going to give me a good time. Not only did their genres involved romance, but just like 2nd Gig they all have individual themes to them. But so far I haven't encounter one single good romance anime. Last weeks review DG pissed me off and now this weeks review Loveless. In a nutshell I thought it was a mixbag (but hey at least it was less stressful than Domestic Girlfriend. ) Which is honestly very disappointing because not only does this anime have a bunch of positives that I liked. But it also had the potential to be seen as a very likable show that people will remember years to come (it would've probably been seen as underrated too. ) However there are bunch of reasons why it will never reach it. But before I get to that let me go over the positives. One of the things that I liked about this anime would have to be the spell battles. Spell battles is where two groups of teams (2 V 2) settle their difference (or it can be 1 on 2. ) The names of these 2 that can only activate and get involved with this fight are the Sentouki and the Sacrifice. The Sentouki are the ones that does most of the fighting while the Sacrifice (just like the name implies) takes all the damage that the fighter receives. In order for the fighter units to do damage to their partners they must be very specific on what they want their abilities to do their opponent (in other words you have to give out full details, but you have to make it sound almost poetic. ) Whoever comes up with the strongest carefully selected words will not only have the upper hand and win. But the winning team gets to choose what happens to them. They can either let them live or perish. My favorite character on this show would have to be Ritsuka. Ritsuka is young 12 year old boy who both lost he's brother and he's memory of what happen 2 years ago (for some unknown reason. ) Because of these tragedies he can't move on in life without he's brother and yearns to regain he's 2 year memory. At the same time he's become very disconnected with others and just prefers to be alone, has to go to consoling, and lives with an abusive mother. In short he's life was a total wreck. But after he met Soubi he started to go through in interesting character development. Little by little he slowly started to get along with he's classmates, Soubi (I'll talk a little more about that later), understand the concept of what love is a little bit, and pretty much learns to move on from he's brother and not worry too much about he's missing 2 year memory. Instead he just focuses on the now and keeps the memory that he has currently in he's mind. Another thing that I like about this anime would have to be the relationship between Soubi and Ritsuka. My feelings toward these two together is the same opinion I have for this show. Mixed. On one hand I do like how the anime takes it's time with building it up. Their relationship starts off as complex (Soubi keeps insisting that he loves Ritsuka. Mostly because Seimei told him to take care of him and another reason (I'll explain that later. ) But every time when Ritsuka wants to be by himself or wants to know the truth about what happen to he's brother, Septimal Moon, or anything else that will help him reach the truth. Soubi never gives him what he wants. ) But as the anime continues step by step they slowly start to get along with and trust each other. After the 9th episode the two of them work well with each other and begin to have a sort of nice chemistry with one another. But on the other hand it can have it's really off moments (like I said before I'll talk about that one later. ) The fourth thing that I liked about this anime would have to be the themes. Loveless goes over 4 topics: The power of words, the importance of memory, strength of family, and the loss of innocence. Since I pretty much went over why memory is so important in the show and the theme of strength of family was no where to be found in the anime. Let's just only focus on the power of words and loss of innocence. Loveless does a not bad job showing two prime examples of how powerful words can be toward others. A prime example would have to be the spell battles. They pretty much represent a dramatic artistic expression of how certain words can touch a human being both physically, mentally, and spiritually. Even when the main characters are not in battle and are just expressing how they feel toward one another or others still has the same effect. But this time without the dramatic expression and instead more of a realistic way. The anime also does a somewhat good job of showing an example of what happens when we lose are innocence. In the world of Loveless everyone is born with cat like features (ears and a tail. ) The only way to lose it is by ridding your virginity. Once you do that you will be deemed as an adult. The reason why is pretty obvious. Cats can be seen as an example for innocence and sort of virginity. Their cute, child like, and doesn't know much about the world itself. Once it's taken away your not only seen as a grown human being, but pretty much an unknown stranger to the world. Not knowing if there is any goodness in you or not. The last few things that I like about this show would have to be the story (Some parts like Ritsuka's character development, he's relationship with Soubi, and their search for the truth was seen as alright. It did have me invested until the last episode (another thing I will discuss as well. ) The action scenes (I thought they were kind of interesting. I've never seen a battle where the only way to fight is by describing in details what you want your abilities to do to your opponent. Granted the fights could've been a bit more brutal, but that still didn't take away my interest in it or made me feel bored inside and out. ) The artwork and animation (I thought it looked both a little good, but mostly fine. I would say that both is on the same level as Paradise Kiss, but a little different. Because both were made by two different companies and their style is still mostly separate. ) Now that positives are out of the way. Let's go over the big issues that I had with this show: The first episode was kind of confusing. That mostly had to do with the pacing and the relationship between Ritsuka and Soubi. For the pacing surprise surprise the episode went by pretty quickly (Just like Domestic Girlfriend the episode never gives the audience any breathing room to process what's going on. ) As for the relationship it came off as completely awkward and rushed to me. Heck the first time the two meet their already taking pictures of each other in the park. I know Ritsuka was lonely at the time, but shouldn't he have some common sense not to go alone somewhere with a stranger he doesn't even know. Which leads me to problem 2. The other half of the two’s relationship. There are times when Rits and Soubi’s relationship can feel very off. A prime example would be the moments when Soubi will say some stuff that sounds very inappropriate (I am not repeating them. ) Whenever he does it makes me feel disgusted, makes me question this relationship, and wonder what made the author and the writer for this anime make the character say all of that and what their intentions are. And I know what some of you are probably going to say “but Blake you were fine with the main characters of Gankutsuou's relationship. What makes them so different from Ritsuka and Soubi's? ” First of all Edmund never came off as a sexual pedo or pervert. Secondly the relationship between him and Albert came off as natural. An the reason why it did was thanks to how the characters were properly written and portrayed (A father and son or genuine possible lovers or both. ) It made you forget their age gap and realize this is just a fascinating fictional love/revenge story. Sure you could sort of say the same about Ritsuka and Soubi's relationship, but not fully because it isn't on the same level as Edmund and Albert's. 3. The English VA's. There are times when the voice acting can be seen as somewhat tolerable and then there are times when it isn’t. Times when they are would have to be Ritsuka’s and Soubi’s English voice actors. They start off as rough at first, but got a little better after the first episode. As for the opposite I would say Sobi’s friend Kio's VA can be a good prime example. There are little times when I find him somewhat tolerable. But majority I feel nothing, but cringe (I have the same exact feelings toward Ritsuka's two friends Yukio and Yayoi's VA, and he's teacher Hitomi's VA too. ) It reminds me that not only will I or any other anime fan will encounter bad dubs sometimes, but it also reminds me why I’ve been watching subs more often then I formally do with dubs. 4. Half of the writing is not that great. When it comes to the opponents that Ritsuka and Soubi face, the two professors from the Septimal Moon, Ritsuka’s friends, Kio, and their teacher. I don’t really care about them at all. Which is unfortunate because almost all of them look like they can be seen as likable characters had they been written a lot better. The same can most definitely be said about Soubi and Ritsuka's relationship. Finally 5. This series feels incomplete. Good God even back in 2005 J. C. Staff was screwing things up for the anime industry. That's right ladies and gentlemen one of the few anime companies that I have mix feelings toward adapted this anime. An might I say it was a "great idea" for them to create it during the time the manga series was seen as sort of new. By the time they released this in April Volume 5 was already out. Which means the only parts of the manga they could adapt at that time was vol 1- a tiny bit of 3. It also means that while this anime feels like J. gave half of crap about what their were making. It still didn't answer any of the following questions: Why was Seimei killed, who is Septimal Moon, what is their and the two professors' that appear in the show goal, who is Ritsuka's true partner, why are people like Soubi and Ritsuka destined to fight or are named specific names like "Loveless and Beloved", who in the world is 7, and etc. You know I really hate it when anime companies have this stupid unnecessary feeling where they have to adapt every new manga that just came out just because it's getting some attention. Even though there's a reason why they do it. It still doesn't justify their actions. They should always wait until it's at an appropriate length like say 8 or 10 volumes. The reason why I say that is because every time when they do the anime's are usually 12 episodes long or shorter or if their lucky 20+ long. An unlike the distraction err I mean side episodes that you see in Shonen Jump anime's like Naruto, One Piece, and Dragon Ball. You have to wait for a long time to see if it's ever going to get a new season or not. For Loveless case, it's never going to receive one. It's the year 2020 and this show (to which to be even more blunt. J. Staff did not do this show any justice for me or even for the manga fans of this series. ) Is going to be celebrating it's 15th anniversary in 2 months time. An we still haven't gotten a 2nd season or at least a remake of Loveless. It's pretty much telling you that J. Staff does not care about this anime or the fans and has zero plans on making either one of the two I or others wanted. Basically they took the money they made off of it and ran to create different projects they gave a crap about. I can only hope that the case never happens to Drifters. In conclusion Loveless might have some likable stuff to it, but not everything about is perfect. Had this show came out say 2010 and if J. Staff put more effort and care into this anime. Maybe I would've liked it a lot more than what I do now. An it most likely could've gotten a new season. Here's hoping someone grabs the rights and do the show right for the manga fans instead of just caring mostly about how much yen their going to make off of it. So with that being said would I say it's better than Yuri On Ice? I wish (one day I'm going to find a Yaoi anime that's better than that overrated C- show. ) Would I recommend it? Kind of, but if your going to watch it I recommend the sub version (even if your new watching anime that way. ) I bet that would be a lot more pleasant to the ears than what I had to deal with in the English version (no offense to the actors that I said were cringe, but that's honestly how I felt. ) I'm giving Loveless a 6. 9/10 let me know what you think in the comments.
