December 2019 anyone ? ☹️. No Todrick Hall didnt go to school with them. Its a rumor thats somehow gotten around in the fandom because some person said it and everyone believed it. He went to Bowie high school. The trio went to Martin high school. I think the confusion is that both schools are in Arlington Texas and they grew up in the same area. Todrick is also 6 years older so he wouldnt have been in school with them either way. I see this comment from fans on so many reaction videos. For the fans that wants to tell me Im wrong please google it first.

Excellent content this week. Very informative. I will keep my subscription going on if the content remains (most of the time) at this quality. I loved this movie! I am a teenager and I went to see it with my mother and nine year old sister. She laughed the whole movie, and so did I. I especially like the stupid camel but Bo was also cute. Mary and Joseph were well animated and the voice actors were great! Took me a long time to realize the voice of Joseph was also Flynn Ryder. This movie is great for all ages, and has good and wholesome humor that is unlike other kids movies. By that, I mean it is actually funny and not totally corny. I really hope that Sony will come out with more Bible stories. Sony, you aced this! I think it had a creative and entertaining twist with a good plot, but it still did the story of Jesus's birth a good amount of justice. Perfect to educate kids about Christmas. I never see movies like this anymore... Almost reminds me of the Biblical Dreamworks movies. I wish more movies like this were coming out, and I think Sony has a talent for this type of movie! I think honestly there is a hidden demand for these types of movies, but it's overshadowed by a lot of the negative and dark movies released today. I love seeing positive movies like this that warm my heart and even give me chills at some parts versus crude humor tucked away in other children's movies, almost like a bone thrown at the adults watching to keep them from falling asleep.

I'm falling. The star in the sky photos. Normani voice is so calm and sweet. The trailer made it look fml.

With Island of Idols beginning tonight we enter the next two season block. Its coming right behind two excellent international seasons (AU CvC2 and SA7 IoS) and that's a tough act to follow. So I figured this would be a good time to update my season rankings. New US + international rankings: Heroes Vs Villains. AU 2017. Philippines. Cagayan. Gabon. China. Pearl Islands. SA6: Philippines. Tocantins. Palau. Micronesia. SJDS. Borneo. AU 2019 CvC2. Kaoh Rong. Blood Vs Water. Amazon. AU 2018 CvC. SA7: Island of Secrets. David Vs Goliath. Panama. Marquesas. Vanuatu. Worlds Apart. Cambodia. Africa. AU 2016. Samoa. SoPa. NZ2: Thailand. HHH. MvGX. Guatemala. Edge of Extinction. Cook Islands. SA5: Champions. Fiji. Australian Outback. Game Changers. Caramoan. Nicaragua. All Stars. Thailand. Ghost Island. One World. Redemption Island. NZ: Nicaragua. AU CvC2 and SA IoS both make the top 20! Top 15 in CvC2's case. Both were really good seasons in my book. CvC2 was stronger by the measure of unpredictability and a crazy merge/end game. IoS had better editing and story telling, although both versions had some very interesting story arcs that kept you involved and hooked. Both casts had their share of stars (Luke, David, Harry, Janine, Abbey, Ross, Pia, and Daisy come to mind for CvC2 while Rob, Nicole, Durao, Steffi, Dante, Seipei, Nathan, and Tania were all great in IoS. Both seasons had strong winners and strong alliances I loved (Champions alliance and the Amigos of course. They will be a tough act for S39 to follow. What are your guys rankings? Post away! Also comment on mine if you wish, a few maybe controversial rankings within, but most are fairly straight forward.

Level 1 George Lucas: Ok so the next set piece is Endor Artists: Ok, what's that like? George Lucas: It's a forest. So next is Hoth, which- Artists: Wait, hold up. What else is there besides a forest? The whole planet can't be- George Lucas: NEXT IS HOTH, WHICH IS SNOWY. level 2 George, I want to go back and take another look at. Mustafar, was it? My notes say it's a 'lava planet. And for some reason, people can breathe and walk around. level 2 We've never actually been on Endor. Just the forest moon. level 2 George Lucas: Alright, next is Coruscant which is a city. Artists: Wait it's a. George Lucas: A CITY! THE PLANET IS A CITY! level 2 Artist: What is on Hoth? George Lucas: A monster called a "Wampa" Artist: Describe it. George Lucas: Yeti. Artist: What else? George Lucas: Horns. Artist: So just a yeti George Lucas: NO, A WAMPA level 2 For every Hoth, theres a Felucia level 2 Comment deleted by user 2 months ago ( More than 1 child) level 2 Endor is a tiny moon, not a planet. Hoth is also a very tiny planetoid. level 2 I've been at the Hoth filming location, and can confirm: It's snowy. Snowy as hell. level 2 Let's not complain about story-telling elements that George Lucas actually gets right. In a movie, you can just say "forest moon of Endor" and bang, the audience gets it. Even if it's not immediately clear whether Endor is the name of the moon or the planet around which it is orbiting; additional detail is pretty much irrelevant to the story. level 2 All these planets might not have the rare tilt that the Earth does. So their climate will be more heavily determined by how far away from their star they are. level 2 Lucas: OK fine we'll make a MOON of Endor all forest. Better? Artists: No? Lucas: Too bad. level 2 To be fair, most planets we've witnessed are like that. Earth is the exception. It does get pretty silly at a certain point (prequels) level 2 The fact that you all manage you start in character through this thread is astounding level 2 The Star Wars universe is a fantasy movie not sci-fi. Why would you expect planets to be geologically plausible? If you want to ruin your suspension of disbelief, consider the fact that anyone in that movie flying a ship or firing weapons manually would be effortlessly destroyed by whoever hooked their ships and weapons up to an automatic pilot. That and the fact every force power that exists can easily be replicated by technology, and it would preform more reliably. level 2 Hoth makes sense. The planet is far away from a sun.

How big is Alchiba the star. Its so soft and good, they have good voices but have too much autotune. maybe if this song haven't autotune, that will be more good. Because I love this original song and anne and james<3 If more thinkin about the artist's feature that will be more good and easy. In the first place you told us Jho Low has nothing to do with 1MDB, later on when BN lost to General Election, your statement on Jho Low changed. You said now Jho Low has lie to us (government. Before PRU14, you said SRC was cleared from wrongdoings. And no 42 millions ringgit came into your personal account. Now, you told court Jho Low baited you into the scam. You pick these 2 answers Najib, either you simply stupid and not fit to be a leader, or just another scumbag liar like Jho Low.

This is a must see for the whole family. Moving, funny, and adventurous. A great cast with a great soundtrack and all the while portraying the greatest story ever told. The birth of a baby, that forever changed the world. See it with the family, see it with friends, and then see it again. Dance with the stars 2018. มองพระเอกเอ็มวีเป็นดีเจพุฒตลอดเลย5555555. What color is Shaula the star. Level 1 Weird to see the response to rumors that I havent seen at all in any form of media. level 2 It probably came from checks article yep, We Got This Covered, the kings of writing an entire article based on a single unconfirmed tweet with no other source. Just last week, they were claiming that the next *Star Wars Story will be about young Yoda fighting Darth Bane. level 2 But now the show is out there even more. No way someone would use these platforms to generate publicity for a major project with tons of money behind it. level 1 I was seeing those rumors flying across the internet and I just couldnt believe them. Its probably the most anticipated show they have - cancelling it would be bonkers level 2 Especially after how insane the reception for Mando was. Star Wars TV is super in demand. level 2 Do you think Ahsoka will be in it? Edit: name spelling level 2 This would easily grab them millions of subscribers alone. Canceling this show would be like saying 'No, our company does not like to make money. I haven't heard Ewan McGregor say anything about not wanting to play the role again. And just in case people haven't read the article: The story is actually a hoax created by a clearly-labeled joke Twitter account called u/DicsussingFilm. The clue that this story wasnt on the level should probably have been the obviously misspelled “Dicsussing” in the handle, but in case that didnt do the trick, the accounts bio says “PARODY ACCOUNT, NOT AFFILIATED WITH u/DiscussingFilm. ” level 2 Hopefully they dont fuck it all up. I'm hopeful because the Mandalorian was great, and also not getting my hopes up because Return of Skywalker was a total and complete failure on every level. I'm hoping they've learned that they can't just go LOOK, STAR WARS, MEMBER? For the love of fuck, PLEASE plot out the fucking story ahead of time and don't just make whatever because "Welp, guess it's time for another show. level 2 Only reason to cancel it miiiight be budget, if they felt like Disney+ wasn't seeing a return for the Mandalorian (unlikely. level 2 As wonderful as it would be to see Ewan Mcgregor fill his old boots. Who's the creative team behind it? Is it someone passionate about Star Wars? I feel those questions are paramount to the success of any Star Wars entity. level 2 Who even starts this rumor? level 2 They can't cancel it, they need it to string us along for year 2 and 3. level 2 Would fit disney. Give us a solo series instead nobody cares about level 2 Even if it IS. They really need to let go of that original canon and bring some new stories. ITS A WHOLE FUCKING UNIVERSE DISNEY.

Q&As with Alla Kovgan at the 1:30pm & 4pm screenings on Saturday, January 25. Final day of screenings! One of the most visionary choreographers of the 20th century, Merce Cunningham could also be counted among its great modern artists, part of a coterie of important experimenters across media that included Robert Rauschenberg, Brian Eno, Jasper Johns, and his long-term romantic partner John Cage. This painstakingly constructed new documentary both charts his artistic evolution over the course of three decades and immerses the viewer in the precise rhythms and dynamic movements of his choreography through a 3D process that allows us to step inside the dance. Director Alla Kovgan has created a visceral experience that both reimagines and pays tribute to Cunninghams groundbreaking technique. A Magnolia Pictures release. An NYFF57 selection. All screenings are presented in 3D! Standard pricing. Closed captions available with our capti-view devices.

1 win & 6 nominations. See more awards  » Edit Storyline Even for those who know little about dance, Merce Cunningham is a recognizable name - an iconic figure in his field. His mid-20th century collaborations with composer John Cage (his lifelong partner) and visual artist Robert Rauschenberg were central to an era of transformation. Cunningham resisted "avant-garde" or any other label. "I don't describe it. I do it. he once said. Now, with Cunningham, we have a chance to experience what he did. Patreon I've now set up a Patreon where you can support my work.  Why do I need a Patreon when Im a published author, I hear you ask? Surely the internationally renown cartoonist Darryl Cunningham must be rolling in money? Er…no. Far from it. I am published in a few countries, but Im not a best seller. My books sell a respectable amount - enough to make publishers happy, but not enough to generate a living for me. Because an author only gets a tiny amount from each book sold, you really have to sell in the tens of thousands, or even better, hundreds of thousands in order to make a living from cartooning alone, and Im far from that. So this Patreon site will help me financially. If you like my work and would like to see me do more, then please consider being a patron.  Access to the private backer blog. • Great to see a film about dancing! A relatively unexplored sub-genre of documentary, and Cunningham was welcome for this alone. It adds to a hole that I suppose Wenders' Pina opened.

  • On that note, this film should not have been shot in 3d, which added nothing but nausia. We expect the 3d was entirely for the purpose of (a) copying Pina and, relatedly, b) getting funding. But Cunningham's dances are far less spectacular and their presentation here likewise. The 3d only distracts from the movement in all but one Warhol-involved set, especially when edited with 2d archival.

  • First half entertaining, second boring. The film progresses at a monotonous pace: one thing happens and then another and then another. No real conflict or tension.

Which is a problem. Because there evidently was plenty of this, but only in reality. The movie, on the other hand, brushes past unconvincingly. No one in the film is given space apart from Cunningham - everyone else speaks to convince the audience how great he is. I wanted to hear from one of his female dancers honestly, in long form, of the darkness of Cunningham. This would help to flesh out his character, give us something to chew on, and organise the film into a narrative. As is, we grew progressively distrusting and disengaged with the Greatest Hits/ Victory Lap tone, before the film ends suddenly with the news that all his dancers left.

  • Ultimately we were left unconvinced that Cunningham (the dancer) was all that interesting. Fashionable certainly, he's attached to the right people, and I'm sure it would be great to be dancing as him, but the just-over-half-full prime-time-at-the-festival cinema was an endless circuit of yawns.

  • Nevertheless we feel cultured now.

An Australian-British venture, the film was co-produced by Ghost Pictures, Passion Pictures with Madman Entertainment and Dogwoof serving as distributors. It is in association with Baird Films and Film Victoria. Mystify: Michael Hutchence had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on 25 April 2019, and was theatrically released in Australia on 4 July 2019. [4] 7] The film was released in the United Kingdom on 18 October receiving generally positive reviews from critics. Synopsis [ edit] Mystify covers the life of INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence which features private home video and archive footage. During the relationship between Minogue and Hutchence, previously unseen privately shot footage shows them in Hong Kong harbour, on board the orient express, and at Hutchences home in the south of France. In the early 1990s an incident occurred while bicycling on holiday in Copenhagen with then girlfriend Helena Christensen, where Hutchence gets shoved to the ground by a taxi driver, hitting his head on the curb and losing consciousness. According to Christensen, Hutchence was rushed to hospital and woke up determined to leave. The injury resulted in Hutchence having permanent loss of sense of smell and taste. Clips show Yates and Michael Hutchence in a 1985 interview on Channel 4 's rock magazine programme The Tube and many years later on The Big Breakfast interview in October 1994. Recollections with voice-overs in the film include Michele Bennett, Kylie Minogue, siblings Rhett and Tina Hutchence, father Kelland Hutchence, stepmother Susie, producer Nick Launay, Bono and INXS band members, composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, bassist Garry Gary Beers and drummer Jon Farriss. The film ends with INXS performing at Londons Wembley Stadium and the song "Mystify" plays over the credits. Production [ edit] Development [ edit] Plans for a biographical drama film about Michael Hutchence were being developed with a script written by Australian film-maker Richard Lowenstein. Lowenstein had previously collaborated with Hutchence in Dogs in Space and INXS music videos. The film was to feature an actor as Hutchence, however the idea of casting someone proved very difficult and with the announcement of the miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, it made the director switch to an archival documentary. [8] The documentary film gathered early development funding and support by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Screen Australia and Film Victoria. [9] A pitch trailer was produced and shown at the 2016 Australian International Documentary Conference in Melbourne where BBC Music took interest. [9] In July 2016, it was announced that a documentary film about the singer-songwriter Michael Hutchence had the official support of INXS band members and manager Chris Murphy, with Richard Lowenstein signed on to direct. [10] 11] 12] 13] The director conducted the first interview (for the biopic research) in 2010 with U2 lead singer Bono who were on tour in Melbourne. Band members from INXS were then interviewed and filmed in 2011, gradually building up an archive of footage. [14] 15] During the interview process, Lowenstein had decided to record just the audio, having individual interviewees in a dark recording studio. A total of around sixty people were interviewed. [16] 15] Tapes of archival footage of varying quality were found in the directors attic lost for twenty years. [15] In October 2017, long negotiations began for the rights to use INXS music in the film, but ended with no deal due to a dispute with Murphy of Petrol Records over the documentarys ownership in return. This lead the director to produce an edit of the film with no music from the INXS catalogue. [15] Eventually, Lowenstein made contact with Hutchences daughter Tiger Lily (the daughter of Hutchence and Paula Yates) in London, through Susie Hutchences advice. Lowenstein flew to London in October 2018 to meet. After viewing a rough cut of the film, Tiger Lily made contact with the bands management and record company. A day later, a deal was struck to use nine INXS tracks. [15] The post-production and supervision of the film were completed by United Finishing Artists with the sound mixing done at Soundfirm, Melbourne. [17] Music [ edit] Composer Warren Ellis was in charge of the film's music and score. [18] The documentary features various digitally-restored tracks which were remixed by Giles Martin in Dolby Atmos supplied by INXS. Music also included are by Hutchence, Max Q with Ollie Olsen, Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave, instrumentals by Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm. [19] The film includes tracks, such as. Never Tear Us Apart " and " Sometimes. 20] Lowenstein stated that there has been no official soundtrack album released, 15] however, a complementary album was released on 5 July 2019 titled Mystify: A Musical Journey with Michael Hutchence. Release [ edit] The world premiere of Mystify: Michael Hutchence took place in Manhattan at the Tribeca Film Festival on 25 April 2019, including a live Q&A session with the films director after the screening. [21] Over the next few months it played in festivals around Canada, Australia, Czech Republic, Germany and New Zealand, building anticipation: at the Hot Docs in Toronto, Sydney, Munich and New Zealand Film Festivals. [22] 23] 24] 25] Advance screenings with Lowenstein in attendance for special Q&A sessions followed in June, at the Astor Theatre in Melbourne, Ritz Cinema in Sydney and the European premiere held at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. [26] 27] 28] An official trailer was released on 4 June 2019 and featured the songs " Mystify " and " Never Tear Us Apart " by INXS. [29] 30] It was released in cinemas across Australia on 4 July and in New Zealand on 12 September through Madman Entertainment. [31] Initially the film was screened out of competition during the BFI London Film Festival on 4 October 2019 at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema [32] 33] and then released in the United Kingdom on 18 October through Dogwoof. The Netherlands saw a release on 24 October by Piece of Magic entertainment. [34] 35] In the United States Fathom Events and Shout! Factory will theatrically release the film for one-night-only on 7 January 2020. [36] Broadcast [ edit] In Australia, the documentary was aired by ABC Television during 24 November 2019. [37] Channel BBC Two aired the film in the UK on 28 December. [38] Home media [ edit] It was released on DVD, digital and Blu-ray disc in Australia by Madman Entertainment on 25 November 2019. [39] It contains twelve special features including early days - where they discuss the bands formation, acting, discussing Prague where three INXS music videos were filmed and Professor of Psychiatry, Steve Ellens analyses into Hutchences death. [40] Dogwoof released the film in the U. K. and Ireland on 9 December. The extra features include an interview with director Richard Lowenstein and producer Chris Thomas, deleted scenes and theatrical trailer. The site's critical consensus reads, Engrossing for casual listeners as well as hardcore fans, Mystify: Michael Hutchence sheds a poignant light on a life and career cut short by tragedy. 66] Metacritic assigned the film a weighted average score of 73 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews. 67] Variety film critic Katherine Turman described it as "While Mystify in many ways amplifies the tragedy of Hutchence's death, it also goes a long way toward explaining and humanizing it. 68] In a positive review for Vogue, Laird Borrelli-Persson wrote " Mystify is proof that Hutchence was, and is, much loved. Also missed, in excess. 69] Graham Fuller of Screen International called the film a "Stand-out documentary" and wrote, The densely woven and worshipfully presented archival footage of the INXS frontman, on stage and off, is a reminder that in terms of wild talent and Dionysian sexiness, he belongs in the same company as Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, and Robert Plant. He concludes: What lifts it above the majority of documentaries about celebrities and artists is its extraordinary intimacy. 4] Harry Windsor, writing for the Hollywood Reporter, said: It should prove essential viewing for the subject's fans: a tender portrait of the man's highs and lows that sheds new light on the broken years that directly preceded his suicide at 37. 70] Leigh Paatsch writing for the Herald Sun gave the film 4/5 stars, saying: Quite wisely, the new documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence doesn't concern itself with smoothing out all the erroneous wrinkles that have crumpled the late INXS frontman's life story over time. 71] Karl Quinn of The Age called the film Lowenstein's "slow-burning labour of love. 72] The Australian 's David Stratton summed up the film as "a terrific documentary, and as complete a portrait of this talented singer as you could wish. calling it "a detailed and revealing portrait" he rated the film four out of five stars. [73] Vicky Roach from The Daily Telegraph gave the film 3 out of 5, saying: While its more visually interesting, there are times when this storytelling device results in a kind of emotional disconnect. And although they corroborate Lowensteins version of events, the bands role in Hutchences story feels strangely under-amplified — emotionally and musically. She summed up the film as "A measured, personal, densely woven account of the man behind the myth. 74] DM Bradley, writing for the Adelaide Review, said: Richard Lowensteins beautifully sad documentary study of the all-too-short life of his late friend Michael Hutchence is a most moving memorial, and rather more about the man than the music. 75] Graeme Tuckett from gave the film 3. 5 out of 5 stars, saying: Mystify is unapologetically one for the fans. But, seeing it as someone who thought he didn't particularly care about Hutchence's story, I was moved. 76] Eddie Harrison of The List awarded the film 4 out of 5 stars, remarking that "Mystify can only be a cautionary tale, yet there's plenty of evidence that Hutchence was an electrifying performer in his prime. 77] Time Out s, Philip De Semlyen described it "As the tragedy unfolds, there's a strange solace in seeing this captivating enigma somehow emerging intact" giving it 4 out of 5 marks. [78] The Sunday Times Edward Porter gave it three out of five stars, wrote "There are insights into the gloomy later years, but it's memorable chiefly for its envy-inducing picture of the upside of being a rock star. 79] Accolades [ edit] ASSG Best Sound for a Documentary: Robert Mackenzie - Re-Recording Mixer & Sound Designer, Simon Rosenberg - Dialogue Editor, Mick Boraso - Sound Designer, Lynn-Maree Milburn - Additional Sound Designer. Not really the sort of thing I had in mind when I decided to watch a sci-fi movie, but I wasn't disappointed. The first half is kind of slow burn, but it shapes up nicely further in. More a movie about redemption and forgiveness than straight up sci-fi, but the ending packs a nice low-key emotional punch. I liked it.

About when wags begin walking round the village imitating the stranger by pulling down the brims of their hats and pulling up the collars of their coats and kids begin singing a Bogey Man song whenever they see the stranger, events take a surreal turn when the vicar's house is burgled and the locals put two and two together and send the constable to arrest the stranger, who then disrobes and disappears, for, it turns out, he is the Invisible Man. Most of H. G. Wells' The Invisible Man (1897) concerns the efforts of "the writer" to collate and interpret the testimony of various witnesses to the Invisible Man's "reign of terror" in the British countryside after the fact. Told from the points of view of countryside denizens like the proprietress of the inn and her husband, the village clock-jobber, general practitioner, reverend, and constable, and even a bachelor tramp, much of the story is a mysterious comedy of class or manner or place. When we finally learn the stranger's name and get his story from his own mouth over half way through, the tale shifts into a study of the alienated mad scientist. Even this is at a remove, however, for his monologue is narrated from the point of view of his university acquaintance Dr. Kemp, who interrupts his story now and then with questions and comments. Wells thus distances us from his scientist until, perhaps, the end of the climax of the short novel. The Invisible Man explores themes that appear elsewhere in Wells' work: unknown wonders and terrors in the world/universe caused or explained by science may appear at any moment; people fear extraordinary things; men of science who cut themselves off from community become "inhuman. contemporary society" is marred by "desecrated fields" and "dank, squalid respectability and. sordid commercialism. It is interesting to read the novel with Wells' great short story "In the Country of the Blind. in which a sighted man enters a village of blind people and thinks to rule them, while here an invisible man thinks at first that his condition will give him wonderful advantages over the common run of sighted humanity, permitting him to perpetrate any crime and to do anything he wants. Perhaps Wells stacks the deck against his scientist. If he had become invisible in the summer instead of the winter, if he'd been a man of calmer temper, if he'd used a different palliative than strychnine, if he'd had more money, if he'd found a less "miserable tool" than the wonderfully named Thomas Marvel, if he'd met Dr. Kemp earlier, and so on, things might have turned out differently. But because the brilliant man is self-centered, irritable, anti-social, and amoral and has become "ruled by a fixed idea" that his experiments are the only reality) has "lost his human sympathy. has come to believe that "the common conventions of humanity" like not robbing people in their own homes "are all very well for common people. and has imagined schemes for using the "commoners" around him instead of for improving their lives, for all those reasons Wells relishes making things difficult for his scientist. As in most of his work, Wells' writing here is concise, clear, amusing, terrifying, and literary. He provides reality-establishing scientific explanations involving optics, physics, dynamos, and chemicals for invisibility. He writes comical and vivid descriptions: His mottled face was apprehensive, and he moved with a sort of reluctant alacrity. He applies irony liberally. An invisible man is a man of power. He stopped for a moment to sneeze violently. And he is capable of harrowing prose: Down went the heap of struggling men again and rolled over. There was, I am afraid, some savage kicking. Then suddenly a wild scream of 'Mercy! Mercy. that died down swiftly to a sound like choking. James Adams reads the audiobook perfectly. People interested in the history of science fiction (this is one of the first sf stories about invisibility) in studies of criminal intellectual pride, or in compact philosophical novels, should read this book.

To be quite honest, I expected a bit more from the people who fended off the Nazis for years. But Wells seemed to think his fellow countrymen would be a bit too inept to toss a sheet over this shivering bastard and punch him in the throat. Instead? July 2010 In a very old episode of This American Life (listen here) John Hodgman asks the ultimate question: Flight vs. Invisibility? Its an amusing party topic, a fun little game to play, but theres actually more to it than that. As a “Super Rorschach Test, ” the question is difficult to answer because the two choices both tell us very different things about ourselves. Flight is noble, something we aspire to; invisibility is a more primal desire, something hidden and mysterious. Theres even a... This was part of a massive buddy read of this title and usually for a buddy read I do something other than a serious review. Jeff, have you ever done a serious review? sigh* I might do a poor rendering of a passage from the book, kind of in the author's style in order to embarrass a few of my Goodreads “friends”, who quite frankly usually have it coming or if Im feeling inspired, Ill do something really creative. Jeff, do you set some sort of bar for “creative”? Is there a sliding scale? Define “... In this famous 1897 novel by H. G. Wells, a reclusive man, swathed in layers of clothing, moves into an English inn. He's unfriendly and angry, and when a burglary occurs, people start to wonder. As well they might! The Invisible Man is a classic read with conflicts galore: Between society and the individual. Between lust for power and wealth, and the collective good of society. Between my literary side that wanted to ruminate on themes of alienation and self-absorption. and my nerdling side... "Oh. disillusionment again. I thought my troubles were over. Practically I thought I had impunity to do whatever I chose, everything - save to give away my secret. So I thought. Whatever I did, whatever the consequences might be, was nothing to me. This was the most extraordinary tale. “Its very simple, ” said the voice, “Im an invisible man. ” Would you vanish if you found the secret to invisibility and try to gain all the advantages you could by concealing yourself from the human eyes? Yes? Most of us would. So did our friend in here. I experienced a wild impulse to jest, to startle people, to clap men on the back, fling people's hats astray, and generally revel in my extraordinary... I have been on a kick to read classic books. Some of them have been hits and others misses, this is definitely a hit. It started off a bit slow but then ended with a bang. Great book! This is the fourth short work of science fiction or fantasy published by H. Wells, and although it is superior to the fantasy you have probably never heard of ( The Wonderful Visit) it is inferior to the two “scientific romances” which you almost certainly know ( The Time Machine and The Island of Dr. Moreau. Still, it shares important characteristics with the others, and together they make up an effective introduction to Wells work. The Wonderful Visit (1895) treats—among other things—with... A scientist invents a invisibility drug and slowly goes mad. Chaos ensues! I read this as part of a colossal Invisible Man group read. We're all familiar with the basics of the tale. For a story written before R'lyeh sank beneath the waves, it was surprisingly readable. So a scientist named Griffin invents a serum that makes him invisible. What's he do with it? Become an even bigger douche nozzle! Griffin becomes invisible and is suddenly above the law, stealing as he sees fit and cheapshotting... Would it be a spoiler if I reveal his secret right here, considering it is given away in the title? Anyway, the guy is invisible and it causes no ends of grief for him and down-to-earth... I won't deny the fact that at one point in my childhood, I wanted to become invisible. It wasn't the top priority in my list of "I hope one day I'd suddenly have this super power" but it was still there, probably at number 6 lagging behind Wolverine's Claws, flying, super strength, teleportation, and Johnny Storm's powers. I haven't thought of the consequences of being invisible then because I didn't contemplate on things that much when I was a child. I mean, who would do that? Take note that I... The Invisible Man, H. I had not read this book in many years and so I decided to re-read it over the weekend. In retrospect, this might have been a big mistake. Previously, I had very fond memories of the book as one of the best of the “classic” horror stories along with Dracula, Frankenstein and The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Well, it is certainly a classic of the genre, but I no longer feel like it deserves a place among the elite of its peers. If can I may borrow and paraphrase from the... Do you think the notion of an invisible man was really foreign to the readers during the time Wells wrote? While I found this book moderately entertaining, thought the scientific "theories" were thought-provoking, and felt there were seeds of some really potent themes (however undernourished the seeds turned out to be) I feel like Wells was totally preoccupied with trying to describe to the reader what it would be like to have an invisible man in our midst. This isn't a concept that I (as a... This is my third book by this author and I think I've accepted that this author isn't for me. I always like the concepts but never seem to like the execution [9/10] This is what a supposedly serious review of the popular, bestselling, turn-of-the-century sci-fi novel looks like when written by a dunkin' dunce like me- full of gaping holes and disconnected thoughts and jumbled array of funny ideas. I never know what to expect, when picking up one of the classics, and I knew next to nothing of this one. I didnt bother to read the synopsis, and Ive learned the hard way to never, ever read the introduction prior to the story. This is a most excellent piece of science fiction wherein a scientist called Griffin, creates a serum which makes him invisible. Then it goes on to explain his decline into total madness. I am generally not a science fiction fan, but this one was masterfully written and kept my interest. I recommend this book to all. Enjoy and Be Blessed. Diamond I was eager to read The Invisible Man (1897) by H. Wells after enjoying my recent reread of Robert Louis Stevensons The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886. Both are science fiction novels that speculate about chemistry. Dr. Jekylls chemical potion transforms him into Mr. Hyde so he can indulge in his debaucheries undetected and unhampered by moral conscience. Griffins potion bleaches his blood so that his technological device can render him invisible and he can do whatever he... Now I really enjoy classic sci-fi and have always enjoyed H G Wells books as they tend to be set around south western London and Surrey where I grew up, so I have an affinity for them. This however I did not enjoy as much as Id hoped. I have read it before in the dim and distant past but remembered little of the tragedy that was to unfold. Enjoyable, yes (ish) but now I know why I didnt remember much because memorable it isnt, shame. *speaker steps up to podium to give review* Good evening, Invisible Man is one of those rare novels that have changed the shape of American literature. This nightmare journey across the racial divide tells unparalleled truths about the nature of bigotry and its effects on the minds of both victims and perpetrators. Readers are ushered into a parallel universe that throws our own into harsh and even hilarious relief. Suspenseful and sardonic, narrated in a voice that takes in the symphonic range of... While reading this book, I tried to imagine reading it in the late years of the 19th century, having in mind that it was an era of inventions, the invention of the television was shortly afterwards, in 1900 a television was shown in an electricity congress in Paris, and that was the first time it was called a television, the escalator, the radio, the helicopter. and many other inventions of the first years of the 20th century, so those people thought that everything was possible, and... My second H. Wells novel. Honestly, I didn't enjoy The Invisible Man quite as much as I did The War of the Worlds. The storyline and writing were both top notch, but I just found it hard to REALLY enjoy a novel in which I totally despised the main character. In all actuality, I guess my feelings towards the protagonist/antagonist (yes, both are the same character) would be considered a win for the author, as I feel that Wells didn't intend for the reader to truly like this character. What I... In which it is demonstrated that invisibility, like wealth, looks, talent, etc doesn't count for much if the possessor remains an asshole. About Invisible Man "In our society, it is not unusual for a Negro to experience a sensation that he does not exist in the real world at all. He seems rather to exist in the nightmarish fantasy of the white American mind as a phantom that the white mind seeks unceasingly, by means both crude and subtle, to slay. An American Dilemma: A Review. Shadow and Act) This quote from Ralph Ellison's review of Swedish sociologist Gunnar Myrdal's book An American Dilemma (which explores the roots of prejudice and racism in the U. S. anticipates the premise of Invisible Man: Racism is a devastating force, possessing the power to render black Americans virtually invisible. Hailed as a novel that "changed the shape of American literature. Invisible Man traces the nightmarish journey of its unnamed narrator from his high school and college days in the South to his harrowing experiences in the North as a member of the Brotherhood, a powerful organization that purports to fight for justice and equality for all people but in reality exploits blacks and uses them to promote its own political agenda. By describing one man's lifelong struggle to establish a sense of identity as a black man in white America, Ellison illustrates the powerful social and political forces that conspire to keep black Americans "in their place. denying them the "inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" guaranteed to all Americans. (As numerous historians have pointed out, the U. Constitution explicitly excludes black Americans, who, until 1865, were perceived not as men, but as property. ) Often described as a bildungsroman, or coming-of-age story, Invisible Man is the tale of a black man's search for identity and visibility in white America. Convinced that his existence depends on gaining the support, recognition, and approval of whites — whom he has been taught to view as powerful, superior beings who control his destiny — the narrator spends nearly 20 years trying to establish his humanity in a society that refuses to see him as a human being. Ultimately, he realizes that he must create his own identity, which rests not on the acceptance of whites, but on his own acceptance of the past. Although Invisible Man received the prestigious National Book Award, some blacks feel that the novel perpetuates black stereotypes. In addition, some black scholars criticized the novel for not being sufficiently "revolutionary" and not accurately depicting "the black experience. Ellison's attitude towards these critics is perhaps best summarized in his classic response to a reporter during a 1973 interview: I'll be my kind of militant. Black feminists also criticized the novel, pointing to the lack of positive female characters, and noting that the women in the novel are all prostitutes, sex objects, or caregivers. Despite these criticisms, Ellison's novel, regarded as a classic of American literature, enjoyed immense popularity. Published in 1952, more than a decade before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 declared racial segregation illegal, Invisible Man has been praised for its innovative style and unique treatment of controversial subject matter. The violence and racial tension depicted in Invisible Man foreshadow the violence engendered by the Civil Rights Movement in cities across the U. The action of Invisible Man spans approximately 20 years, tracing the narrator's life from his high school graduation in Greenwood, South Carolina, to his involvement in the Harlem Riot of 1943. By tracing the narrator's journey from the rural South to the urban North, the novel emulates the movement of the slave narratives, autobiographies written by formerly enslaved black Africans that trace their escape routes from bondage in the South to freedom in the North. One of the most famous slave narratives is Frederick Douglass' autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, published in 1845. This fact is important to our understanding of Invisible Man, because Frederick Douglass (like the narrator's grandfather) symbolizes the ghost of slavery alluded to at several critical points in the novel. The narrator's path also traces the path of thousands of Southern blacks who moved to the North during the 1930s and 40s in search of better jobs and new opportunities during the Great Migration. Call and response — a concept rooted in the traditional Negro sermons in which the pastor's impassioned call elicits an equally impassioned response from the congregation — is one of the defining elements of African American literature. With this in mind, Invisible Man can be read as a response to Langston Hughes' poem, Harlem. which poses the question, What happens to a dream deferred. Does it explode. According to Ellison, who also explores the myth of the American Dream, the answer is a resounding, Yes. In addition to Langston Hughes, the two authors who had the greatest influence on Ellison's writing style were T. Eliot and Richard Wright. Ellison was especially intrigued with Eliot's Wasteland, a poem that explores the spiritual wasteland of contemporary society, and with Wright's acclaimed protest novel, Native Son, and his nonfiction work, 12 Million Black Voices, which Ellison felt was even more powerful than Native Son. Ellison was also influenced by H. G. Wells' science fiction novel, The Invisible Man, and Richard Wright's short story, The Man Who Lived Underground. " A complex, multi-layered novel, Invisible Man can be read as an allegory (a story with both a literal and symbolic meaning that can be read, understood, and interpreted at several levels) that traces the narrator's perilous journey from innocence to experience, and from blind ignorance to enlightened awareness. Invisible Man can also be read as a quest narrative. Like Homer's Odyssey and Dante's Divine Comedy — both of which are alluded to in the novel — Invisible Man involves a symbolic journey to the underworld, where the narrator must meet and defeat various monsters — such as Brother Jack — and overcome seemingly impossible trials in order to return home. Ellison's use of inverted reality, creating a world that mirrors the reality of the white world, is a key structural element in Invisible Man. In the narrator's world, black is white, up is down, light is darkness, and insanity is sanity. This structural device is used to illustrate that blacks, due to their perceived inferior status in American society, often experience a radically different reality than whites, creating the illusion that blacks and whites live in two different worlds. The white man's American dream is the black man's nightmare, and behavior deemed normal for whites is deemed abnormal (or crazy) for blacks. A key example is the novel's closing scene: The narrator returns to his underground home, the basement (coal cellar) of a whites-only apartment building. Although this can be viewed as a physical move down into darkness and despair, in the narrator's inverted reality, his return to his underground habitat illustrates a psychological move up towards awareness and enlightenment. Unlike conventional novels that present a series of related sequential events, Invisible Man consists of a series of seemingly unrelated scenes or episodes — often expressed in the form of stories or sermons — linked only by the narrator's comments and observations. In this way, the structure of the novel mirrors the structure of a jazz composition, players stepping forward to perform their impromptu solos, then stepping back to rejoin their group. The structure also emulates the oral tradition of preliterate societies. Passed down orally from generation to generation, their stories embodied a people's culture and history. In the novel, each character's story can be viewed as a lesson that contributes to the narrator's growth and awareness, bringing him closer to an understanding of his own people's culture and history.

Download The Invisible manga. After watching trailer i realised that nowadays, double meaning words are being used much more prominently. 10 years ago this words were never used in the movies. Not good to watch with parents. I absolutely love this video. For one thing Freddie looks like Edward scissor Hands, can't help but wonder if the writer of that movie loved this video too. But this video is sad too because he was so sick. All the makeup and all the extra clothes couldn't hide how sick he really was. I read somewhere that Freddie was so worried about the penguins during the filming. He kept wanting breaks for them and even took them to a little creek near by for water. As sick as he was, he worried about the penguins. Just one of the many reasons i love Freddie. 🐧 🐧.

It is based on H. Wells ' 1897 science fiction novel The Invisible Man and produced by Universal Pictures, the film stars Claude Rains, in his first American screen appearance, and Gloria Stuart. The film was written by R. Sherriff, along with Philip Wylie and Preston Sturges, though the latter duo's work was considered unsatisfactory and they were taken off the project. [2] As an adaptation of a book, the film has been described as a "nearly perfect translation of the spirit of the tale" upon which it is based. [3] It spawned a number of sequels and spin-offs which used ideas of an "invisible man" that were largely unrelated to Wells' original story. Rains portrayed the Invisible Man ( Dr. Jack Griffin) mostly only as a disembodied voice. Rains is only shown clearly for a brief time at the end of the film, spending most of his on-screen time covered by bandages. In 2008, The Invisible Man was selected for the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. 4] Plot [ edit] On a snowy night, a stranger, his face swathed in bandages and his eyes obscured by dark goggles, takes a room at The Lion's Head Inn in the English village of Iping in Sussex. The man demands that he be left alone. Later, the innkeeper, Mr. Hall is sent by his wife to evict the stranger after he makes a huge mess in his room while doing research and falls behind on his rent. Angered, the stranger throws Mrs. Hall down the stairs. Confronted by a policeman and some local villagers, he removes his bandages and goggles, revealing that he is invisible. Laughing maniacally, he takes off his clothes, making himself completely undetectable, and drives off his tormenters before fleeing into the countryside. The stranger is Dr. Jack Griffin, a chemist who has discovered the secret of invisibility while conducting a series of tests involving an obscure drug called monocane. Flora Cranley, Griffin's fiancee and the daughter of Griffin's employer, Dr. Cranley, becomes distraught over Griffin's long absence. Cranley and his other assistant, Dr. Kemp, search Griffin's empty laboratory, finding only a single note in a cupboard. Cranley becomes concerned when he reads it. On the note is a list of chemicals including the drug monocane, which Cranley knows is extremely dangerous; an injection of it drove a dog mad in Germany. Griffin, it seems, is unaware of this. Cranley deduces that he may have learned about monocane in English books printed before the incident that only describe its bleaching power. On the evening of his escape from the inn, Griffin turns up at Kemp's home. He forces Kemp to become his visible partner in a plot to dominate the world through a reign of terror, commencing with "a few murders here and there. They drive back to the inn to retrieve his notebooks on the invisibility process. Sneaking inside, Griffin finds a police inquiry under way, conducted by an official who believes that it is all a hoax. After securing his books, he attacks and kills the officer. Back home, Kemp calls first Cranley, asking for help, and then the police. Flora persuades her father to let her come along. In her presence, Griffin becomes more placid and calls her "darling. When he realizes that Kemp has betrayed him, his first reaction is to get Flora away from danger. After promising Kemp that at 10 o'clock the next night he will murder him, Griffin escapes and goes on a killing spree. He causes the derailment of a train, resulting in a hundred deaths, and throws two volunteer searchers off a cliff. The police offer a reward for anyone who can think of a way to catch him. The chief detective in charge of the search uses Kemp as bait, feeling that Griffin will try to fulfill his promise, and devises various clever traps. At Kemp's insistence, the police disguise him in a police uniform and let him drive his car away from his house. Griffin, however, is hiding in the back seat of the car. He overpowers Kemp and ties him up in the front seat. Griffin then sends the car down a steep hill and over a cliff, where it explodes on impact. Griffin seeks shelter from a snowstorm in a barn. A farmer hears snoring and sees the hay, in which Griffin is sleeping, moving. The man notifies the police. The police surround the building and set fire to the barn. When Griffin comes out, the chief detective sees his footprints in the snow and opens fire, mortally wounding him. Griffin is taken to the hospital where, on his deathbed, he admits to Flora that "I meddled in things that man must leave alone. As he dies, his body gradually becomes visible again. Cast [ edit] Claude Rains as Dr. Jack Griffin / The Invisible Man William Harrigan as Dr. Arthur Kemp Gloria Stuart as Flora Cranley Henry Travers as Dr. Cranley Una O'Connor as Jenny Hall Forrester Harvey as Herbert Hall Dudley Digges as Chief Detective E. E. Clive as Constable Jaffers Several notable character actors appear in minor roles, including Dwight Frye as a reporter, Walter Brennan as a man whose bicycle is stolen by Griffin, and John Carradine, acting at that time under the name Peter Richmond, as a Cockney informer. Production [ edit] Claude Rains was not the studio's first choice to play the lead role in The Invisible Man. Boris Karloff was originally supposed to play the part but withdrew after producer Carl Laemmle Jr. tried too many times to cut Karloff's contractual salary. [2] To replace Karloff, Chester Morris, Paul Lukas and Colin Clive were considered for the part. [2] 5] It was James Whale, who was assigned to direct the film to replace Cyril Gardner, 5] who wanted Claude Rains to play Griffin – Rains was his first choice. [6] Problems in developing the script held up the project for some time; in June 1932 the film was called off temporarily. [5] The Invisible Man was in production from June to August 1933 [7] at Universal Studios. [8] Filming was interrupted near the end by a fire, started by a smudge pot kicked into some hay, which damaged an exterior set. [5] The film was released on November 13, 1933 [9] 10] and was marketed with the taglines "Catch me if you can. and "H. Wells' Fantastic Sensation. 11] Differences from novel [ edit] Although the basic framework of the story and the characters' names are largely the same as in the novel, there are several great differences. Each takes place around the same time it was released: the novel in the 1890s, and the film in 1933. In the novel, Griffin (the Invisible Man) remains almost a totally mysterious person, with no fiancee or friends; in the film he is engaged to a beautiful woman and has the support of her father and his associate. In the novel, Griffin is already insane before he makes himself invisible and he is entirely motivated by a lust for power. In the film, Griffin is a more sympathetic character motivated by his ambition to make a scientific breakthrough in order to become a worthy husband to Flora and his madness is a side effect of the invisibility serum. Dr. Kemp survives in the novel; his life is saved by those who ultimately kill Griffin. In the film, Dr. Kemp is terrified throughout, and pays with his life for betraying Griffin. Special effects [ edit] The film is known for its visual effects devised by John P. Fulton, John J. Mescall and Frank D. Williams, whose work is often credited for the success of the film. [2] When the Invisible Man had no clothes on, the effect was achieved through the use of wires, but when he had some of his clothes on or was taking his clothes off, the effect was achieved by shooting Claude Rains in a completely black velvet suit against a black velvet background and then combining this shot with another shot of the location the scene took place in using a matte process. Claude Rains was claustrophobic and it was hard for him to breathe through the suit. Consequently, the work was especially difficult, and a double, who was somewhat shorter than Rains, was sometimes used. [12] 13] The effect of Rains seeming to disappear was created by making a head and body cast of the actor, from which a mask was made. The mask was then photographed against a specially prepared background, and the film was treated in the laboratory to complete the effect. [5] However there is a lapse at the end of the film when the invisible Rains walks through the snow and the outlined indentations as he walks appear as the imprints of shoes instead of his naked feet as it should have been. Reaction, awards and honors [ edit] The movie was popular at the box office, and was Universal's most successful horror film since Frankenstein. [1] Mordaunt Hall of The New York Times wrote, The story makes such superb cinematic material that one wonders that Hollywood did not film it sooner. Now that it has been done, it is a remarkable achievement. 14] The film also appeared on The New York Times ' year-end list as one of the Ten Best Films of 1933. [15] Variety called the film "something new and refreshing in film frighteners" that "will more than satisfy audiences. but suggested that some of the laughs in the picture might not have been intentional. [16] Film Daily wrote, It will satisfy all those who like the bizarre and the outlandish in their film entertainment. 17] John Mosher of The New Yorker called the film a "bright little oddity" 18] that "never was properly appreciated. 19] Despite the critical acclaim, H. Wells, the author of the original source text, said at a dinner in its honor that "while he liked the picture he had one grave fault to find with it. It had taken his brilliant scientist and changed him into a lunatic, a liberty he could not condone. Whale replied that the film was addressed to the "rationally minded motion picture audience. because "in the minds of rational people only a lunatic would want to make himself invisible anyway. 5] In the original novel, the scientist was amoral from the start and did not hesitate to rob his own father [who consequently commits suicide] to get the money to buy certain drugs for the invisibility process. In the movie, an essential color-removing drug in the process had the unavoidable side-effect of unbalancing his mind. Despite his misgivings, Wells did praise the performance of Una O'Connor as the shrieking Mrs. Hall. [20] Whale, who had previously directed Frankenstein as well as the first version of Waterloo Bridge, received a Special Recommendation from the 1934 Venice Film Festival in recognition of his work on The Invisible Man. [21] Rains' film career took off after The Invisible Man, which was his first American film appearance. The film was nominated for the American Film Institute 's AFI's 100 Years. 100 Thrills and AFI's 10 Top 10 (science fiction film) while the character was nominated as a villain for the AFI's 100 Years. 100 Heroes and Villains list. Home media [ edit] In the 1990s, MCA/Universal Home Video released The Invisible Man on VHS as part of the "Universal Monsters Classic Collection. 22] In 2000, Universal released The Invisible Man on VHS and DVD as part of the "Classic Monster Collection" a series of releases of Universal Classic Monsters films. [23] 24] 25] In 2004, Universal released The Invisible Man: The Legacy Collection on DVD as part of the "Universal Legacy Collection. 26] 27] This two-disc release includes The Invisible Man, along with The Invisible Man Returns, The Invisible Woman, Invisible Agent, and The Invisible Man's Revenge, as well as a short documentary— Now You See Him: The Invisible Man Revealed —hosted by film historian Rudy Behlmer. [26] 27] In 2012, The Invisible Man was released on Blu-ray as part of the Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection box set, which includes a total of nine films from the Universal Classic Monsters series. [28] 29] The film received a standalone Blu-ray release in 2013. [30] 31] In 2014, Universal released The Invisible Man: Complete Legacy Collection on DVD. [32] This set contains six films: The Invisible Man, The Invisible Man Returns, The Invisible Woman, Invisible Agent, The Invisible Man's Revenge, and Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man. [32] In 2016, The Invisible Man received a Walmart -exclusive Blu-ray release featuring a glow-in-the-dark cover. [33] In September 2017, the film received a Best Buy -exclusive steelbook Blu-ray release with cover artwork by Alex Ross. [34] In August 2018, the six-film Complete Legacy Collection was released on Blu-ray. [35] 36] That same month, The Invisible Man and its sequels were included in the Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection Blu-ray box set. [37] 38] This box set also received a DVD release. [39] In October 2018, the film was included as part of a limited edition Best Buy-exclusive Blu-ray set titled Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection, which features artwork by Alex Ross. [40] Sequel [ edit] Due to the success of the first film, a sequel title The Invisible Man Returns was later released in 1940 starring different actors and following different characters. The film stars Vincent Price as a new Invisible Man, while John Sutton plays the brother of Claude Rains 's character from The Invisible Man. Reboot [ edit] In February 2016, it was announced that Johnny Depp would star in the remake with Ed Solomon writing the film's script, while Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan would be the producers. [41] 42] The film was planned as part of Universal Pictures ' modern-day reboot of Universal Monsters, called Dark Universe. The series of films, which began with The Mummy (2017) was to be followed by Bride of Frankenstein in 2019. Franchise producer Alex Kurtzman stated that fans should expect at least one film per year in the shared film universe. [43] However, on November 8, 2017, Kurtzman and Morgan moved on to other projects, leaving the future of the Dark Universe in doubt. [44] In January 2019, Universal announced that it would completely scrap the Dark Universe and make filmmaker-driven films based on the classic monsters starting with a remake of The Invisible Man to be written and directed by Leigh Whannell and produced by Jason Blum, but it would not star Johnny Depp as previously reported. Variety has reported that Elisabeth Moss is in talks to star as Cecilia Kass. [45] 46] Storm Reid, Aldis Hodge, and Harriet Dyer joined the cast in the following months. [47] 48] 49] In July 2019, Deadline reports that Oliver Jackson-Cohen was cast as the titular character. [50] The Invisible Man is scheduled to be released on February 28, 2020. Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. Racism as an Obstacle to Individual Identity As the narrator of Invisible Man struggles to arrive at a conception of his own identity, he finds his efforts complicated by the fact that he is a black man living in a racist American society. Throughout the novel, the narrator finds himself passing through a series of communities, from the Liberty Paints plant to the Brotherhood, with each microcosm endorsing a different idea of how blacks should behave in society. As the narrator attempts to define himself through the values and expectations imposed on him, he finds that, in each case, the prescribed role limits his complexity as an individual and forces him to play an inauthentic part. Upon arriving in New York, the narrator enters the world of the Liberty Paints plant, which achieves financial success by subverting blackness in the service of a brighter white. There, the narrator finds himself involved in a process in which white depends heavily on black—both in terms of the mixing of the paint tones and in terms of the racial makeup of the workforce. Yet the factory denies this dependence in the final presentation of its product, and the narrator, as a black man, ends up stifled. Later, when the narrator joins the Brotherhood, he believes that he can fight for racial equality by working within the ideology of the organization, but he then finds that the Brotherhood seeks to use him as a token black man in its abstract project. Ultimately, the narrator realizes that the racial prejudice of others causes them to see him only as they want to see him, and their limitations of vision in turn place limitations on his ability to act. He concludes that he is invisible, in the sense that the world is filled with blind people who cannot or will not see his real nature. Correspondingly, he remains unable to act according to his own personality and becomes literally unable to be himself. Although the narrator initially embraces his invisibility in an attempt to throw off the limiting nature of stereotype, in the end he finds this tactic too passive. He determines to emerge from his underground “hibernation, ” to make his own contributions to society as a complex individual. He will attempt to exert his power on the world outside of societys system of prescribed roles. By making proactive contributions to society, he will force others to acknowledge him, to acknowledge the existence of beliefs and behaviors outside of their prejudiced expectations. The Limitations of Ideology Over the course of the novel, the narrator realizes that the complexity of his inner self is limited not only by peoples racism but also by their more general ideologies. He finds that the ideologies advanced by institutions prove too simplistic and one-dimensional to serve something as complex and multidimensional as human identity. The novel contains many examples of ideology, from the tamer, ingratiating ideology of Booker T. Washington subscribed to at the narrators college to the more violent, separatist ideology voiced by Ras the Exhorter. But the text makes its point most strongly in its discussion of the Brotherhood. Among the Brotherhood, the narrator is taught an ideology that promises to save “the people, ” though, in reality, it consistently limits and betrays the freedom of the individual. The novel implies that life is too rich, too various, and too unpredictable to be bound up neatly in an ideology; like jazz, of which the narrator is particularly fond, life reaches the heights of its beauty during moments of improvisation and surprise. The Danger of Fighting Stereotype with Stereotype The narrator is not the only African American in the book to have felt the limitations of racist stereotyping. While he tries to escape the grip of prejudice on an individual level, he encounters other blacks who attempt to prescribe a defense strategy for all African Americans. Each presents a theory of the supposed right way to be black in America and tries to outline how blacks should act in accordance with this theory. The espousers of these theories believe that anyone who acts contrary to their prescriptions effectively betrays the race. Ultimately, however, the narrator finds that such prescriptions only counter stereotype with stereotype and replace one limiting role with another. Early in the novel, the narrators grandfather explains his belief that in order to undermine and mock racism, blacks should exaggerate their servility to whites. The narrators college, represented by Dr. Bledsoe, thinks that blacks can best achieve success by working industriously and adopting the manners and speech of whites. Ras the Exhorter thinks that blacks should rise up and take their freedom by destroying whites. Although all of these conceptions arise from within the black community itself, the novel implies that they ultimately prove as dangerous as white peoples racist stereotypes. By seeking to define their identity within a race in too limited a way, black figures such as Bledsoe and Ras aim to empower themselves but ultimately undermine themselves. Instead of exploring their own identities, as the narrator struggles to do throughout the book, Bledsoe and Ras consign themselves and their people to formulaic roles. These men consider treacherous anyone who attempts to act outside their formulae of blackness. But as blacks who seek to restrict and choreograph the behavior of the black American community as a whole, it is men like these who most profoundly betray their people.

This film is heartfelt and touching, but it isn't necessarily moving. That's not necessarily a bad thing (not everyone really wants a good cry) and the movie does manage to extend understanding. While films remembering the Holocaust aren't unusual, those that show us how the pain of that loss of life manifests in an individual person are far more unusual. We meet Dovidl (called "David" as a child (played at this age by Luke Doyle) whose father makes an impossible decision out of love and sacrifice. As the war wages, David doesn't know whether his Jewish family is dead or alive, and The Song of Names plays out the kind of behavior that can result from that kind of psychological unrest. After David's disappearance, Martin feels a similar unrest because he doesn't know what happened to David. Unfortunately, when Martin eventually does learn the truth, he doesn't seem to be satisfied. a feeling most viewers will second. The film's complex storyline, which jumps back and forth between multiple timeframes, falls victim to the usual book-adaptation trap: There's just too much to condense into two hours to do the story justice. As it stands, it's hard to get attached to either David or Martin, even though the talent of the young actors who play them as children is outstanding and their scenes are the most engaging. As young Martin, newcomer Misha Handley very effectively transmits the jealousy a child would feel toward an interloper suddenly added to his life. taking over half his bedroom and most of his father's attention. But he soon embraces David as a friend, brother, and fellow mischief maker. The matters that relate to the movie's title are profound, but it's hard to appreciate the direction David takes with his transformative experience. At the last minute, we're informed that David may be sympathetic, but he's never been a great guy; that type of complex, highly flawed character plays well in books, but in movies, we wonder why we've spent two hours tracking down a man who we're told was never worth our time. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about survivor's guilt and its role in The Song of Names. What does that term mean, and what impact does it have in The Song of Names? Does the film make you feel sympathy, empathy, or compassion for David? What's the difference? What do you think of how the film depicts Martin's curiosity and perseverance and the self-control  exerted by David as an adult? Do you agree with how they applied these traits and skills? What do you think life might have been like for a kid in WWII-era London? What do you know about the war? How does this film compare to other movies about that time? How does the movie depict Orthodox Judaism? Do you think David's decision on how to live his adult life was warranted? Can you think of other movies that depict this aspect of Judaism? Why is representation important? What are some examples of behavior that Martin and David engage in that we might now deem as unacceptable? Does the film justify that behavior? Do you think it's OK in this context? "The Name Game" Single by Shirley Ellis from the album The Name Game Released 1964 Genre R&B, novelty Length 2: 39 single version 4:39 album cut Label Congress Songwriter(s) Shirley Ellis Lincoln Chase Producer(s) Charles Calello " The Name Game " is an American pop song written and performed by Shirley Ellis [1] as a rhyming game that creates variations on a person's name. [2] History [ edit] It was written by American singer Shirley Ellis with Lincoln Chase, and Ellis's recording, produced by Charles Calello, was released in late 1964 as "The Name Game. That record went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 4 on the magazine's R&B charts in 1965. The record was re-released in 1966 and again in 1973. While Ellis' stock in trade was novelty hits, she was not a one-hit wonder. A serious R&B singer for 10 years before that hit, Ellis also charted with "The Clapping Song (Clap Pat Clap Slap. 8 pop and #16 R&B) and "The Nitty Gritty. 8 on the Hot 100 and #4 on the Cash Box R&B chart. Ellis performed "The Name Game" on major television programs of the day, including Hullabaloo, American Bandstand and The Merv Griffin Show. The song later became a popular children's singalong. [2] The Name Game" has been recorded by dozens of recording artists in the years since, notably Laura Branigan, whose version produced by Jeff Lorber, appearing on her 1987 album Touch, features a classroom of third-grade schoolchildren singing along to the tongue-twisting game. Often covered by relative unknowns on collections of songs for children, other cover versions have been recorded by artists as diverse (and campy) as Dean Ford and the Gaylords (1965) Divine (1980) and Soupy Sales (1965. The Brazilian singer Xuxa recorded a song using the same play and same sample in the song "Jogo da Rima. In 1965, singer Olivia Molina recorded a Spanish version, Juego De Palabras. In 1975, Anne Renée recorded "Un jeu d'fou" in French. In 1982, Stacy Lattisaw took her "rap" recording of "Attack of the Name Game" to #70 on the Hot 100. In 1990, Cree Summer Francks (as Elmyra) performed a cover version of the song on an episode of Tiny Toon Adventures using the Tiny Toons' names (except Plucky Duck's, as pointed out in that episode's end credits. In 1993, this song was used in television commercials for Little Caesar's Pizza 's kids meals with free toy, performed by The Little Caesars, sequeling the "Wooly Bully" commercials from 1992. Stacy's version was sampled by Mariah Carey on her 1999 single " Heartbreaker. from her album Rainbow. Character Sister Jude ( Jessica Lange) sang her version of the song in season 2 episode 10 "The Name Game" of American Horror Story. Sheldon Cooper in Season 9 Episode 21 briefly sings "The Name Game" in The Big Bang Theory. Ellis told Melody Maker magazine that the song was based on a game she played as a child. [2] On May 3, 2017 Howard Stern stated that he sings this song to young children, and calls it "his secret weapon" saying "it not only comforts them, it also distracts them from [his] unsightly features. 3] Rules [ edit] Using the name Katie as an example, the song follows this pattern: Katie, Katie, bo-batie, Bonana-fanna fo-fatie Fee fi mo-matie Katie! A verse can be created for any name with stress on the first syllable, with X as the name and Y as the name without the first consonant sound (if it begins with a consonant) as follows: X. X) bo-b ( Y) Bonana-fanna fo-f ( Y) Fee fi mo-m ( Y) X) And if the name starts with a b, f, or m, that sound simply is not repeated. For example: Billy becomes "Billy Billy bo-illy. Fred becomes "bonana fanna fo-red. Marsha becomes "fee fi mo-arsha. 2] The song gives no indication of what to do with names where the stress falls on a syllable after the first, like Renee, Maria, or Lebron. ' The most important qualification for every leader is not wanting to be leader

Tom hanks is perfect for this role. Finally, the best casting choice in Hollywood History: Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis. & It's end of year 2019. Nobodys called me precious in a long time and I got emotional hearing it from a movie trailer. This has to be one of the best trailer I've seen in a while. Seen this trailer at the theater. Into WW2 films already. So I will def., see this. But if I weren't into WW2 films already, the cinematography was breathtaking, I'd go simply for that alone. FINALLY A MOVIE SO DIFFERENT FROM THE MAINSTREAM CROWD AND UNIQUE IN ITS ART. I AM GOING TO WATCH THIS.

Such terrific cinematography. Critics are saying this is Malick's best since The Tree of Life

Yes, this is a wonderful and memorable film. The director, Francois Girard, and, I suspect, the same Canadian production company were involved in the 1998 RED VIOLIN. Like that film it takes place over multiple time periods, in this film clearly stated to be 1951, 1986, and the earliest, unidentified time which can be inferred to be sometime between March and September 1939. The scene shifts back and forth a good deal and some critics found this confusing and destructive of continuity but I found no difficulty in following the story line. Memory is not linear and orderly but rather fragmented and out of sequence, particularly when dealing with highly charged emotionally traumatic experiences. This is an exceptionally intelligent screenplay where not everything has to be spelled out. It's true that a key plot point mystery is fairly predictable. Yet the story builds to a wrenching climax in a way you don't see every day in the movies.
Tim Roth plays well against type as a quiet, introspective Brit. The score composer, Howard Shore, was involved in composing the impressive music in the Lord of the Rings and does an award-deserving job here. I rate the film at 3.5/4 stars. Strongly recommended for everybody, especially any serious music student as well as anyone of Jewish background, particularly of GenX through to Millennials.

He ate the Body of Christ, with a nice chianti. THE SONG OF NAMES (François Girard. 113 minutes. Some subtitles. Opens Wednesday (December 25. See listing. Rating: NN Almost entirely overlooked when it premiered at TIFF earlier this fall, The Song Of Names is a maudlin melodrama about lives lived in the shadow of the Holocaust. Its professionally made and it features some talented actors, but from the very first frames its an empty box, a movie made in the style of other, more prestigious works that drifts along in their wake, never finding a life of its own. The Song Of Names is not unlike half a dozen other projects Robert Lantos has produced over the decades – among them István Szabós Sunshine, Jeremy Podeswas Fugitive Pieces and Atom Egoyans Remember. This one – adapted from Norman Lebrechts novel about one Englishmans decades-long search for the vanished Polish violin prodigy he knew when they were boys in Blitz-era London – is one of the weakest: a leaden, self-serious affair that uses the horrors of history to burnish its own importance. François Girard, who established his musical bona fides with Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould and The Red Violin back in the 90s, is operating on autopilot here, letting Howard Shores score do all the emotional work while his cast – among them Tim Roth, Clive Owen, Jonah Hauer-King, Gerran Howell, Luke Doyle and Misha Handley – march glumly through predetermined trajectories in a chronologically shuffled narrative. The story, which spreads itself across half a century and multiple countries may appear ambitious, but it really just boils down to the same empty conversations about faith and responsibility between two people who never fully understand each other. I found myself wondering whether the emotions would land harder if The Song Of Names had approached its narrative from the perspective of the Englishmans wife. Catherine McCormack gives the character such interesting, prickly contours that she commands our attention whenever she appears on screen. The film doesnt really care about her, but she puts in the work anyway. At least someone is trying. @normwilner.

The novel follows a friendship between two Jewish boys, starting before the Second World War and continuing far beyond. Martin was the son of a music publisher, and his friend Dovidl was Polish. They had a typical boys' friendship; competitive and fighting one moment, but fiercely... I found the book was quite special and full of depth. The writer addressed topics like friendship, bonding, love for music, dealing with the loss of family members in a remarkable way. Despite the bunch of difficult words and sentences, the book was easy to read and kept me longing to the end. I was touched multiple times by the way Lebrecht expresses feelings by using quite remarkable metaphors. The grief the Jews must have faced during the second world war came through right into my veins. I enjoyed this story and learned a bit about Jewish culture/religion as well as what people endured in the time of the Holocaust. It was an interesting plot also. "My life was a pathetic sonata built upon an unresolved chord, infinitely tense and unrewarding. Like an amputee, I never lost sensation in the missing limb, or the ache of deprivation. Not a day passed without a remembrance of wholeness" The Song of Names' is full of musical references, and tells the story of a friendship, a betrayal and delivers the promise of a resolution to the mystery. As the book begins, Martin, the narrator, is a sixty-something uninspired classical music promoter in an... A very good book with flashes of brilliance in observations about music & musicians & Jewish traditions & faith in the wake of the Holocaust. (Lebrecht is a lifelong music critic who here tries his hand- very successfully- at fiction. Here, the Holocaust... Norman Lebrecht is a British social critic and the author of several novels and works of non-fiction. One of his novels, The Song of Names" has been made into a movie, some 20 years after its publication. I haven't seen the movie yet; it hasn't opened but I did see a preview, which prompted me to read the book. "The Song of Names" is a book about the Holocaust, with a personal twist. It's the story of a young Polish Jewish genius violinist who is brought to London in the summer of 1939 by his... I was stoked to read this book-the review I read of it made it sound amazing. However, I was disappointed. I didnt even read it all the way through-I stopped and scanned. Sometimes I judge a book by how long it takes me to get through it: if I cannot put it down, or if I am savoring every chapter, turning the pages slowly, or if I am starting it over again to make it last are all indicators that it is a great book! None of this happened with this one. In fact, it was the opposite criteria that... Two Jewish boys befriend each other; one, Martin, is well off but feels like an outcast - he is very unhappy and lonely, is pudgy, and has a stutter. The other, David, is suave, confident, and is a violin virtuoso but is poor; his family is from Warsaw and sent him to study w/ a illustrious violin instructor in London when WWII interrupts all plans. He moves into a spare room w/ David's family, promoters of classical music. The two boys grow very close, both feeling like outcasts in different... Low 2. There is a poignant and very moving explanation behind the title of this book but unfortunately the author has not woven this idea into a novel which really captures the attention of the reader. The protagonist, Martin Simmonds, fails to engage the readers interest, while the all-too brief appearance and disappearance of the mysterious figure of Dovidl, the Polish violin prodigy who enters the home of the protagonists family during World War II, fleetingly elevates the novels appeal... I have to say that I didn't really enjoy this book. The story itself is a good one, but it just wasn't told well. I was bored most of the time and I didn't feel sympathy for or even like any of the characters, except perhaps the wife who was only a very minor character anyway. The story wasn't told chronologically which made especially the beginning quite boring. When I found out what the "Song of Names" actually was, it was a bit heart-stopping, but that was one of the few touching moments in... I think this book tries to be too many things. Some of them (a story of Jewish life and inter-communal pressures, an interesting discussion of class in Britain, a look at xenophobia during the war in Britain) it does well. Others (a story about likable people who do bad things or blame others for their problems) it doesn't do in such a winning manner. Overall, enjoyable. Would I read it again or recommend it? Not unless I knew a Yiddish speaking prodigy who'd relate. I thought this was excellent. I really enjoyed the writing, which had that dry, subtle, British wit. I also found the story interesting. The Jewish angle was refreshingly neither unduly negative nor ignorant. I'm looking forward to a good book club discussion, and I actually recommended it to the YIOP book club as well. A very good read indeed. Lebrecht has taken back and forth in time to good effect, keeping us constantly engaged with an excellent narrative. His knowledge of the world of classical music and the Jewish faith is well-used without any obvious parading of research and knowledge for its own sake. Highly recommended. As a classically trained musician I absolutely loved the musical descriptions in this book- the story itself was fascinating - loved this book! I feel that the author of this book has never heard of George Orwell's 5 Rules For Effective Writing, which includes the rule that one should never use a long word when a short one will do. The main characters in this book feel like they've swallowed dictionaries as small children and are spending the rest of their lives regurgitating them in long, philosophical preponderances (yes, I can play this game too. Tiring, isn't it. The children/teens are certainly the most well spoken I've ever come... This is an engrossing read, full of observations, witticisms and poignant truths. The plot is very engaging. Unfortunately, the narrator is a narcissistic cynic and not likeable- it is hard to rejoice in his successes or sympathize with his failures. So the wonderful inventions of the author in the plot, characters and settings lose much of their power in the dry and distant tellings of the narrator. Overall a worthwhile read but it leaves you a little cold. Read this book over 5 years ago. Fascinated by the inner world of musicians and the religious traditions of Judaism this was a perfect choice. However, so much more was found in this book. I often return to it in my thoughts. To the fragility of friendship between two boys and the brotherly love and the sense of calling. Very emotional and in the end, devastating. This book was all over the place and the writing style was not for me I tried to get into it but I just couldnt. This book could have definitely gone places and it just didnt it just pretty much stayed flat until the very end. Well written with a twist. Clever way of telling the story. Sagged in the middle. Read it because of movie publicity, glad I did. Lots of music information, like taking a very interesting classical musical course. Interesting and unique story. I didnt feel really connected to any of the characters, but did feel I was part of the story. Great read for classical music lovers, unique story with a Jewish historical background. Interesting twist at the end. Good plot, well-written but I was handicapped by not finding any of the characters the least bit likeable - hence 3 stars. I simply loved this book. Great story telling, interesting characters etc. I did like the contrast between traditional Jewish culture, our "modern" world and world of classical music. Martin is a boy living with his parents in pre-WWII London when another boy, David, a refugee from Poland, comes to lives with them. David is a musical prodigy, and Martin's father is in the business of representing musicians. Then, years after he has first arrived, after David has long been considered one of the family, and Martin's closest friend, he disappears. It happens on the day of his musical debut. Years later, when Martin is in his sixties, he believes he may have found out what... It was focused on the Jewish history of England during and after World War 2, first of all. It was also about the musical side of the world, I guess it focuses more on the violinists, so if youre a musical person, you would be interested with this book. The book taught me about some aspects of the religion, and the musical world, and it continued to interest me. Martin Simmonds is the narrator and it is his point of view/story that the whole book is about. The book begins with his elderly self... Martin L. Simmonds is the underachieving son of a music manager whose life changes forever when a Polish violin prodigy comes to live with his family during the World War II. But Dovidl's family perishes in the Holocaust, and Dovidl becomes more a part of the Simmonds family than Martin has ever felt. The two become like brothers, but on the day of his great public violin debut, Dovidl disappears, leaving the Simmonds family in a shambles and Martin without a sense of direction or hope. The... I struggle with rating books. because a number system never quite seems to do justice to the book. It is a beautiful novel, in many ways. The prose gorgeous. However, I just couldn't ever love, or even care that much, about the characters. something that is normally easy for me. They were all just so unbelievably self-involved, and not in an endearing way. While a story, in many ways, about childhood boy friendship. the characters just never seemed to really love one another; much more... Two Jewish boys befriend each other; one, Martin, is well off but feels like an outcast - he is very unhappy and lonely, is pudgy, and has a stutter. There have been many films about the Holocaust covering it from many different angles so a new film must be in the excellent category because 'good' isn't good enough and though "The Song Of Names" has some interesting sections it has too much working against it. One of the interesting parts is the name of the film itself and if there really is a song of names and after some research, I have to do more research because I haven't found a definite answer yet! The screenplay by Jeffrey Caine, based on a novel by Norman Lebrecht, goes back and forth from the 1930s to the 1980s with 3 different actors playing the 2 main characters Davidl Rapopart and Martin Simmonds when it could have easily been done chronologically. The story is about a 12-year-old violin protege, Davidl who is brought from Poland to England by his father hoping to find a place for him to escape from the nazis. A music publisher, impressed by the boy's talent, agrees to take him in and after a minor skirmish with the publisher's son who is a couple of years younger, the 2 become fast friends. At the age of 21 Davidl is to give his musical debut completely subsidized by the publisher but never shows up and has disappeared. The film then follows Martin as he looks for his friend and tries to find out why he disappeared. There are many awkward scenes and some that take your breath away such as the one where Martin and his wife walk through Treblinka, a Nazi death camp, where tall, standing stones memorialize the dead. Some in the audience may not be aware that Davidl having a bar mitzvah means he is now a man at 13. The musical moments shine while it is hard to really rate the performances due to the going back and forth through the decades. "The Song Of Names" is a good movie but not quite good enough to attract enough of an audience.

In this highly entertaining and accomplished first novel by a well-known English journalist and music critic, two men who became friends as children in London during WWII are reunited after 40 years. In 1939, nine-year-old Martin Simmonds meets Dovidl Rapoport, a violin prodigy the same age. Martin's father is a music impresario, and when Dovidl is sent by his Polish parents to study in England, he offers the boy lodging in his own home. Dovidl and Martin quickly become best friends. Dovidl's parents perish in the Holocaust; then, in 1951, Dovidl—his name changed to the more palatable Eli—is about to embark on a career as a concert virtuoso when he disappears on the day of his debut. Martin becomes obsessed with his friend's disappearance, and after decades of searching finally finds him in a dreary town in the north of England. Lebrecht's deep knowledge of music, his insights and his verbal inventiveness enliven the book (describing two awkward professors, he says they "stand out like frayed cuffs on a funeral suit. However, the novel drags in the middle with the backstory of the two boys living through the blitz; this is material that has been presented elsewhere and in greater depth. Also, there's no real mystery in unraveling either the location or identity of Rapoport. Simmonds's supposedly epic quest ( I am consumed by thoughts of finding him" is over in less than two days, and it's a letdown for the reader not to be able to sift through tantalizing clues. These shortcomings aside, this is a confidently written and engaging first novel by a talented writer. The Third Battle of Panipat fought between the Maratha Confederacy and the Durrani Empire on January 14, 1761, resulted in a catastrophic defeat for the Marathas. Yet all accounts of the battle say that from the morning till afternoon, the Marathas were winning and the Afghan right wing had been smashed. Everything changed when the Peshwas young son and the nominal commander of the army, Vishwas Rao, fell.  But what killed him? Thats our question on the 255th anniversary of the battle. All historians agree that Vishwas Raos death a little after 2pm changed the course of the battle in favour of the Afghans. Different historical accounts give different reasons for his death. But the most widely accepted cause of Viswas Raos death is a stray cannonball hit on the head. The Wikipedia article on Vishwas Rao also gives that as the reason as do some English accounts penned much later. But eyewitness accounts of the time give a different picture. Two of the most widely known eyewitness accounts of the battle are the ones by Kasiraj Pandit, an agent of Shuja ud-Daulah of Oudh, and Muhammad Jafar Shamlu, a camp follower of Shah Pasand Khan. Both Shuja ud-Daulah and Shah Pasand Khan fought for Ahmed Shah Abdali. Kasiraj in his bakhar said Vishwas Rao was wounded and dismounted from his horse. Bhau ordered him to be taken up an elephant where his body was later found. Kasiraj also said that the wounds were “a slight one with an arrow over the left of the eye and of a sword on the back of his head”. Kasirajs version is backed up by another Afghan account that says Vishwas Rao fell in a hail of arrows. Even Malharrao Holkars chronicle, Holkarnchi Kaifiyat, said an arrow killed him. (A jamburak gun on display at the Albert Hall Museum, Jaipur) Shamlu, meanwhile, said Vishwas Rao was hit by a jamburak (swivel gun) shot on the head and died (at a critical stage of the battle, the Afghans deployed 3, 000 camels equipped with jamburaks. His version is both supported and contradicted by an anonymous account called Bhausahebanchi Kaifiyat (believed to have been written by Nana Purandare. It says Vishwas Rao was felled by a ‘goli, but insists he was hit in the chest and not on the head. Its interesting to note that he used ‘goli and not ‘gola, which was used for a cannonball. Nana Fadnavis and Satvoji Jadhav, too, used the term ‘goli. The Mirat-i-Ahmadi written about eight months after the battle said the young commander was hit on the head by a musket ball. So which version is the closest to the truth? A jamburak gun fired either a one-pound or two-pound round shot. What sort of trauma could such a shot cause? “That depends on the muzzle velocity and the weight of the shot. A two-pound shot would be slightly bigger than a tennis ball. If it hits someone on the forehead, we can assume that it would cause serious disfigurement of the face apart from severe concussion. If it just touches the top of the head and passes off, it may not disfigure the face but the trauma will be enough to kill a man, ” said Major General A J S Sandhu (Retd) a veteran artillery officer. I spoke to Dr Uday S Kulkarni, author of Solstice at Panipat: 14 January 1761, who is also a surgeon by profession. “The size of the projectile and its velocity are both important. In the 18th century, these were all low velocity and cavitation injury of hi-velocity projectiles was not present then. The injury on the forehead above the left eye could have bled and may have been cleaned up on the elephant. The injuries can be penetrating or blunt. Penetrating injury can cause instant loss of consciousness and even death if hits the forehead. A blunt, low-velocity wound can cause anything from concussion to death after a while from intra-cranial bleeding causing a space-occupying lesion. The forehead wound may be a laceration from an arrow (as these were freely used) and the blow that caused death may have left no external trace if it was a large ball travelling at low velocity but caused an intra-cranial injury causing gradual loss of consciousness. If loss of consciousness was gradual it explains the dialogue and Bhau shifting him on an elephant. The issue is difficult to resolve now. ” The contemporary descriptions of the body suggest there was no disfigurement of the face. The body was, in fact, in good condition when it was found. So is it possible that Vishwas Rao fell to small arms fire? The Afghans used more matchlocks than flintlocks, which had longer range and greater accuracy than the Maratha fusils. And those matchlocks fired not just iron balls but also rocks and pebbles. “Its possible quite possible. Of course, nothing could be said with absolute certainty over two centuries later, but the kind of wounds that you have described, these may have been caused by small arms fire, ” General Sandhu said. Perhaps this is some food for thought for future researchers? DISCLAIMER: Views expressed above are the author's own.

I went to watch this film with zero expectations and maybe that was the reason why I liked it.
The story, direction etc. isn't as bad as people are saying it to be. Yes over-glorification of Maratha is there but that was expected.
Arjun Kapoor sucked heavily.I mean this dude just doesn't know how to act. Sanjay Dutt didn't speak in accent and that was annoying. Apart from them the overall performance was good especially Kriti Sanon. This is probably the best performance of her life till now.

Free stream panipat news. Sanjay Dutt nails it.
The film will take you back to a period of history that changed the fate of South Asia.
For the director to be able to sum it up in less than 3 hours is praiseworthy.
Beautiful cinematography and camera work is phenomenal as it captivates with war scenes until the end. Hats off to Sanjay Dutt for this performance.
I wont spoil it. Go watch it for the history. .

It's a must watch because it is our(Indian) history and people should encourage directors, producers, writers by watching such films who take risks and work hard to showcase our history.
